ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION:
- Receives, processes and searches inmates.
- Controls the movement and activities of inmates.
- Photographs and fingerprints inmates, suspects and applicants; oversees permitted telephone calls.
- Maintains records related to inmates in custody.
- Observes and routinely checks inmates in custody to assure their health and safety.
- Prepares and serves meals to inmates.
- Issues clothing, medication, supplies; checks and maintains inventory.
- Returns inmates’ property upon release.
- Prepares inmates for court appearances and transfer to other facilities.
- Ensures the security, health, safety and well being of inmates.
- Performs routine housekeeping duties and maintains cleanliness of the facility.
- Accesses AFIS for proof of inmate identification when necessary.
- Handles visitation for prisoners by family, ministry and attorneys.
- Successfully completes annual training programs and all other in-service training as required.
- Protect private and sensitive information by maintaining Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) compliance.
- Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

- Education level of high school diploma / GED or above.
- Possession of a valid Oklahoma driver’s license or a valid driver’s license from State of residency.
- No felony criminal convictions or pending felony criminal charges.
- No misdemeanor criminal convictions in the last three (3) years or pending misdemeanor criminal charges.
- Ability to obtain and retain certification as a “Correction Officer” by the State of Oklahoma.
- Ability to obtain and retain a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) certification and compliance within one year.
- Ability to obtain and retain certification in CPR and First Aid.
- Ability apply first aid techniques.
- Ability to obtain and retain certification in the use of the AFIS through the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation. (Automatic Fingerprint Information System).
- Knowledge of principles and practices related to the operation of a jail facility.
- Ability to work with minimum supervision and to follow written and oral instruction.
- Ability to plan, organize, prioritize and follow through with an appropriate course of action.
- Ability to communicate effectively both oral and written including knowledge of correct English language.
- Knowledge of principles and methods of record keeping as applied to jail operations.
- Ability to supervise trustee inmates performing work inside and outside of the Police Department.
- Knowledge of modern office practices, methods and computer equipment.
- Ability and willingness to assume responsibility and demonstrate initiative.
- Knowledge of basic civil and criminal statues.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervision, peers, other law enforcement officials and the public.

A Correction Officer will exercise a good deal of discretion and act independently in some situations while performing a variety of duties and tasks, which may include but are not limited to:
65% - Assign prisoners to specific cells, check cells regularly for security purposes, conduct random searches, operate the booking center, operate the housing picket control, and self-initiate appropriate activity when not involved with assigned tasks.
15% - Prepare and serve meals to inmates, retrieval of trash and empty trays upon completion of meal. Maintain kitchen in a clean and orderly manner.
10% - Receive and release inmates, make in-custody searches, check and secure personal property of persons being incarcerated, complete booking procedure, photograph and fingerprint inmates.
5% - Control and distribute medication as prescribed and document distribution in records.
5% - Arrange visitation of inmates, keep track of court appearances, and testify in court when necessary.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to walk, sit and talk or hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move 50 to 100 pounds, and occasionally lift weights in excess of 100 pounds with assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee may be exposed to blood borne pathogens, bodily fluids, violent behavior and other jail hazards.

The work environment for this position is indoors at the Lawton Municipal Jail. This is a uniformed position. The work is generally performed in a fast-paced environment where noise, harsh language and odors are encountered. Physical demands include restraining combative subjects and, on occasion, movement of non-resistance persons and objects requiring motions such as dragging, pulling, lifting, carrying and supporting. The position is shift work, consisting of three (3) shifts per day. Persons must be able to work weekends, evenings, days, nights, holidays and/or irregular hours.
Personal contacts are typically with co-workers and fellow employees of the department as well as employees of different departments, external agencies, and the general public. The purpose of the contacts is to assist with the duties or to answer questions requiring explanation or limited interpretation of procedures, rules and regulations. Contacts may be civil or hostile in nature.
