Career Purpose

Under moderate supervision, performs semi-skilled routine custodial duties in city buildings and facilities requiring physical dexterity, replace supplies and perform other related work as necessary.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF POSITION:

  • Sweep, mop, scrub, wax and buff floors, hallways, stairways and restrooms. Vacuum and shampoo carpets.
  • Collect and remove waste paper and trash from offices, halls and restrooms. Wash walls, windows, mirrors, light fixtures and drinking fountains.
  • Dust, clean and maintain furniture, fixtures, windowsills and railings.
  • Replace light bulbs and minor painting
  • Clean and disinfect toilets, washbowls and urinals. Replenish towels, tissues, soaps and other restroom supplies.
  • Maintain the security of buildings at all times. Secure doors and windows during non-business hours. Turn lights on and off. Lock and unlock doors.
  • Assist in loading, unloading and moving of supplies, equipment and furniture up to 50 pounds.
  • Report needs for building repairs. Keep supervisor informed as to supply statuS.

POSITION STANDARDS:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Six months janitorial experience
  • Knowledge of modern and efficient janitorial methods and techniques.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary in general building maintenance and custodial work.
  • Ability to operate and maintain vacuum cleaners, floor scrubbers, polisher, carpet cleaner and other necessary custodial equipment.
  • Possess a valid class D drivers license and acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to work extended hours or evening, night or weekend shifts. May be required to return to work in emergency situations.
  • Pass a criminal background check.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk and use hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds aided by other employees or mechanical devices. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works in high, precarious places and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately loud

POSITION LOCATION:

This position will be assigned specifically to the Police Department and be under their supervision. There may also be more stringent requirements and background check for the police position.
