Electronic Maintenance Technician - 3251

Career Purpose

This job is located in the Electronic Maintenance Division, Public Works Department. This is skilled technical work in construction, maintenance and repair of the City's electronic and communications equipment.

This position is assigned to the Electronic Maintenance Division which is located within the compound of the City of Lawton Public Works Department facilities located at 2100 SW 6th Street.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF POSITION:

  • Repair of UHF and VHF repeater systems, base, portable and mobile transceivers, pagers and paging units.
  • Maintenance and repair of wire line control links for base station remote operation and dispatch consoles.
  • Maintenance of antenna structures, arrays and transmission lines.
  • Repair and maintenance of various emergency and safety equipment such as sirens, rotating lights, traffic directional systems and rechargeable flashlights.
  • Maintenance and repair of surveillance and camera systems, public address systems and Civil Defense sirens.
  • Maintenance of required F.C.C. checks, F.C.C. station licenses and equipment repair log.

 

OTHER DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of computerized traffic control equipment and systems.
  • Repair and maintenance of digital loop detection equipment.
  • Repair, maintenance and programming of conflict monitor units.
  • Programming and hardware modification of advanced microprocessor controlled signal equipment.
  • Repair and maintenance of fixed cycle synchronized signaling equipment.
  • Repair of traffic control radio receivers, and sync decoders.
  • Underground cable and wiring installation and repair.
  • Installing and debugging of new traffic control units.
  • Repair and maintenance of highway sign lighting systems.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

POSITION STANDARDS:

  • Graduation from high school supplemented by study of electronics at a vocational or technical school or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least two (2) years civilian or military practical experience in electronics.
  • Possession of an F.C.C., N.A.B.E.R., or I.S.C.E.T. license or certification.
  • Possession of a General Class or higher Radio Telephone License issued by the Federal Communications Commission.
  • Possession of a valid Oklahoma drivers’ license at date of hire or valid drivers’ license from state of residency.
  • Knowledge of AM and FM radio system theory.
  • Knowledge of current industry standards and practices and F.C.C. regulations pertaining to modern communication equipment.
  • Familiarity with transmission and propagation of electromagnetic signals.
  • Knowledge of digital electronic theory, and the practical applications thereof.
  • Knowledge of analog measurement and control theory, and the practical applications thereof.
  • Ability to calibrate and repair analog measurement devices.
  • Knowledge of microprocessor theory, applications and programming.
  • Ability to perform a wide variety of construction, repair and maintenance work requiring the utilization of certain technical electronic or mechanical equipment.
  • Ability to work in high places and perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time.

The personal contacts are typically with individuals or groups which have, or could have some impact, on program or policy matters. The purpose of the contacts is to plan and coordinate work efforts; provide input and advice, and resolve problems by influencing and motivating. The persons contacted typically have mutual goals and basically cooperative attitudes.
