Career Purpose

This position is located in the Fire Department. The employee, under supervision and in accordance with all Fire Department regulations, provides first responder pre-hospital emergency medical care to victims of accidents, injuries or illness; participates in fire suppression, prevention and administrative shift duties as trained and assigned. The incumbent also performs other related job duties when not responding to fires, medical calls, and/or other emergencies, such as equipment maintenance, general housekeeping, participating in ongoing job-related training, the performance of fire inspections, and public fire prevention presentations, etc.

Essential Duties: 

  1. Respond to fire alarms, emergency medical calls and other requests for assistance to protect life and property in accordance with departmental policies, procedures and chain of command.
  2. Respond to emergency medical care calls as assigned for assistance to sick or injured people and treat them according to Advanced Life Support (ALS) guidelines.
  3. Respond to accidents, disasters, emergency rescues, searches, and any other emergency situation as directed by superior officers.
  4. Assists in rescue and mitigation response to Hazardous Material’s emergencies.
  5. Participates in specialized rescue operations, such as vehicle extrication, high-angle rescues, confined spaces, swift water, collapsed buildings, trench collapse, etc.
  6. Participate in drills and training classes in fire-science, emergency first-aid, medical emergency techniques and response, hazardous material handling, fire station/equipment maintenance and other related subjects.
  7. Operate pumps and apparatus; use ladders, hoses and other fire suppression equipment.
  8. Use portable fire extinguishers; pry bars, pike poles, axes, and other fire suppression equipment including power tools (chainsaw, K-12, PPV).
  9. Perform salvage and overhaul to minimize damage to structures and their contents, including cleanup and water removal after the fire.
  10. Upon qualification, may be required to drive mobile fire apparatus when assigned.
  11. Cleans and inspects all issued Firefighting/EMS equipment, and assists in the maintenance of general cleanliness in and about the fire station.
  12. Assists with lifting, loading, and transporting patients from various emergency scenes, and from difficult and hazardous locations into ambulances.
  13. Assists with gathering patient information from the injured/ill, as well as from stressed family members/others.
  14. Transport victims to hospitals when necessary and/or directed, and may communicate with the hospital’s emergency room physician while in route.
  15. Participates in the performance of pre-fire planning to include completing appropriate associated paperwork.
  16. Assists with securing and protecting fire scenes to preserve potential evidence when arson may be suspected.
  17. May be required to testify in court on cases concerning emergency responses of the Lawton Fire Department.
  18. Conducts tours of fire station facilities; provides directions to citizens as requested.
  19. Follows departmental policies, rules & regulations, and standard operating guidelines for firefighting, as well as directives from superior officers.
  20. Subject to call back to duty in case of major emergencies.
  21. Performs other work-related duties as assigned when not responding to emergencies.
  22. Assist in daily apparatus maintenance to include checking oil levels, tire pressure, other fluid levels.
  23. Perform routine tests and inspections of air packs, ropes, safety belts and other miscellaneous equipment.
  24. Minor repair of hoses and other firefighting equipment as necessary.
  25. Assist in testing of fire hydrants and hoses as necessary.
  26. Perform care, maintenance, and cleaning of station, equipment, and grounds.
  27. Assists with the performance of record keeping duties as required for maintenance of equipment, inventory, fire and emergency statistical data and other records.
  28. Attend seminars and training sessions as assigned.
  29. Learn and stay familiar with local geography, streets, apartments, and conditions that could potentially affect fire operations.
  30. Assist with the Department’s Public Education, Fire Safety, and Community Outreach Programs.
  31. May be required to fill and service fire extinguishers for city facilities.
  32. Acquire and maintain specialized training/certification as required.

  16. Ability to frequently deal with distraught persons.
  17. Knowledge of, and skill in, the operation and maintenance of various types of medical equipment with ability to supervise its effective use.
  18. Knowledge of the State and Federal regulations that govern the delivery of ALS medical services.


  1. Must be at least 18 years old at date of hire.
  2. Successful completion of 12 months probation period.
  3. A pre-employment physical is required.

Required Training and Licensure/Certifications

  1. Must possess High School diploma or GED.
  2. Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate valid Oklahoma Driver's License by date of hire.
  3. Successful completion of State and National Advanced-EMT licensure/certification within one year of date of hire.
  4. Successful completion of the Basic Fire Training Course required by the Lawton Fire Department.
  5. Must be able to obtain HAZ-MAT Awareness for First Responder, HAZ-MAT Operations for First Responder, and Firefighter I, within the first year of employment and/or prior to completion of probation.


  1. Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.

  3. Running various distances, climbing, jumping, crawling, or otherwise surmount physical obstacles in fire fighting.

  1. Ability to Work 24-hour shifts, averaging 56-hour week,
  2. Work is performed indoors, in vehicles and in outdoor settings, in all weather conditions, including temperature extremes, during day and night.
  3. Work is often performed in emergency and stressful situations.
  4. Individual is exposed to loud audible alarms and sirens, as well as to other hazards associated with fighting fires and rendering emergency medical assistance, including smoke, noxious odors, fumes, chemicals, solvents and oils.
  5. Individual occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid and slippery and icy conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration.
  6. Additional hazards include emergency driving, dangerous animals, electrical hazards, traffic control and natural and man-made disasters.
