This position is assigned to the Wastewater Treatment Plant Division of the Water/Wastewater Department.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION:
- Regularly perform analytical tests according to Environmental Protection Agency protocol in order to maintain proper operation of the laboratory.
- Regularly use accurate and verifiable test results for compliance reporting to Environmental Protection Agency, Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality, and operational personnel for in-house process control.
- Regularly uses proper techniques to assure safety in the laboratory.
- Regularly collect, organize, and/or preserve samples for analysis, storage, or shipment.
- Regularly perform chemical and bacteriological analysis, including tests for chlorine, phosphorus, ammonia, pH, temperature, percent solids, biochemical oxygen demand, total suspended solids, settleable solids, volatile solids, and others as required.
- Regularly document all findings by filling out station bench sheets, operational reports, logbooks chain of custody forms, spreadsheet, and graphs.
- Regularly prepare chemical reagents and bacteriological media and stains according to Environmental Protection Agency standards.
- Regularly clean laboratory and equipment, including wiping counters, washing glassware and sample bottles, sterilizing equipment and apparatus and wiping down analytical equipment.
- Frequently abide by a Quality Control (QC) program to assure accurate laboratory results.
- Frequently monitor lab inventory and requisitions chemicals and supplies as necessary. Contacts supervisor when equipment is in need of repair or calibration.
- Frequently maintain SDS records for chemicals used in the laboratory.
- Occasionally respond productively to change and performs other tasks as needed.
Education and Experience:
- Graduation from a accredited high school, GED equivalency or vocational school supplemented by special training as a Laboratory Technician.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of the materials, methods, techniques, tools, and equipment used in the areas of specialization.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and safety precautions necessary for the safe conduct of work and equipment operation.
- Knowledge of standard operating procedures used to perform approved analytical tests.
- Knowledge of chemical analysis techniques and processes.
- Knowledge of and ability to operate computerized analysis equipment and related laboratory equipment.
- Ability to perform many tasks simultaneously and produce accurate test results in a timely manner.
- Possession of a valid Oklahoma driver’s license.
- Must obtain a Class “C” Wastewater certification as issued by the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality within one year and a Class “C” Wastewater Lab certification within one year of being able to test.

While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee frequently works near moving and vibrating mechanical parts. The employee rarely works in high, precarious places; is rarely exposed to fumes or air borne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and is rarely exposed to risk of electrical shock.
The employee will occasionally be exposed to wet or humid conditions and will frequently be exposed to outside weather conditions of extreme heat or cold with occasional ice or snow.
The employee will rarely be working during hours of darkness and will occasionally be near heavy vehicle traffic. The employee will occasionally be working in or near excavations or confined spaces.
The noise level of the work environment is quiet in the office or laboratory, moderately quiet in the service vehicle, but is noisy in the field.
