Career Purpose

Performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance work, and operates a variety of equipment in the construction, operation, repair and maintenance.

This position is assigned to the Traffic Control Division, which is located within the compound of the City of Lawton Public Works Department facilities located at 2100 SW 6th Street.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF POSITION:

  • Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.
  • Operates a variety of power construction and maintenance equipment.
  • Insures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools after use.
  • Drives trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling and unloading of various equipment, gravel and sand.
  • Operate 1-ton trucks for the transport of materials, tools and safety devices.
  • Help Equipment Operators in the installation, maintenance and repair of new and existing signs, removal of street markings, street striping and any other functions of the division where additional manpower is required.
  • Use a variety of hand tools and/or powered hand tools.

 

OTHER DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor; cleans equipment.
  • Occasionally operate light equipment, if necessary, such as walking paint stripers, planer, etc…
  • Help in controlling traffic in and around job sites with the use of flags, signs, barricades, lighted arrow boards and traffic cones. When necessary, will direct or divert traffic with the use of “Slow-T-Stop” paddles and hand signals.
  • Operates light construction and power equipment when required to do so.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

POSITION STANDARDS:

  • Graduation from high school education or GED equivalent is preferred, and Two (2) years of experience relating to construction, maintenance, or repair, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Some knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in maintenance, construction and repair activities;
  • Skill in operation of some of the following tools and equipment:  Motorized vehicles and equipment, including dump truck, pickup truck, utility truck, street roller, lift truck, tamper, plate compactor, saws, pumps, propane kettle, compressors, sanders, generators, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, detection devices, mobile radio, phone, ditch witch.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time; Ability to work safely; Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public; Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
  • Possession of a valid Oklahoma driver’s license

Frequently:      Required to stand and talk or hear, walk, sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and smell. The employee must frequently lift and or move up to 50 pounds

Occasionally:   Exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals.  The noise level in the work environment is moderately noisy which requires hearing protection.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

SUPERVISION:

The employee works under the supervision of a field supervisor or crew leader who provides continuing or individual assignments by indicating generally what is to be done, limitations, quality and quantity expected, deadlines and priority of assignments. The employee uses initiative in carrying out recurring assignments independently without specific instructions. The supervisor assures that the work is technically accurate and in compliance with instructions of established procedures.
