Plant Operator, WWTP - 3241

Career Purpose

Provides a variety of skilled and technical work participating in the operation of a wastewater treatment plant on an assigned shift.

This position is assigned to the Wastewater Treatment Plant Division of the Water/Wastewater Department.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION:

  • Regularly operates pumps, digesters, air compressors, heating units and appurtenances at the wastewater treatment plant.
  • Regularly ensure that the wastewater plant is in full compliance with all state and federal requirements.
  • Regularly sample, test and record results; and make proper adjustments of machinery, equipment and related control apparatus in accordance with established operating procedures and standards.
  • Regularly inspect plant equipment and machinery such as pumps, digester, boilers, compressors, filters and chemical feeders to determine that all machinery is operating properly, and make minor adjustments to the equipment.
  • Regularly inspect recording charts, gauges and meters; inspects treatment plant equipment, such as chlorinators, digester, sludge collectors and related equipment for proper operation. Malfunctioning of any equipment or apparatus is reported to supervisor and employee initiates troubleshooting/repair procedures.
  • Regularly maintains appearance of clarifiers, buildings and plant grounds to include cleaning, cosmetic maintenance, mowing, and general lawn care.
  • Regularly operate heavy equipment such as backhoe, dump truck, semi-trucks, etc.
  • Regularly perform preventative maintenance on wastewater facility lines for the conveyance of wastewater.

OTHER DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Occasionally assist Maintenance Technician in equipment repair and installation.
  • Occasionally inspect wastewater pumping lift stations located within the wastewater treatment plant.
  • Occasionally perform other duties and tasks as assigned by supervisor.
  • Frequently unload chemicals and supplies such as sodium hypochlorite and polymer.

POSITION STANDARDS:

Education and Experience:

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or GED Equivalent. 
  • Experience in the operation of electrical and mechanical equipment similar to that used in a WWTP.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the general operating principles of electrical and mechanical equipment similar to the type used in a WWTP.  
  • Knowledge of the safe practices and procedures for handling chemicals associated with a wastewater treatment plant. 
  • Ability to accurately follow operating and recording procedures.
  • Able to read and perform mathematical calculations at a 12th grade level.
  • Ability to work and complete task unsupervised or with limited supervision.
  • Ability to detect faulty operating characteristics in equipment and the ability to execute remedial action procedures.

Special Requirements:

  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.
  • Possession of or the ability to obtain Class “C” Wastewater Certification and a Class “C” Wastewater Lab certification from the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality within one year of date of hire.
  • Possession of or the ability to obtain a class “A” (CDL) within six- months of date of hire.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions, and is exposed to all weather extremes.   While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingersto handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk or sit and frequently required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl or smell.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to (50) pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to one hundred (100) pounds with assistance. The noise level in the work environment is moderately noisy which requires hearing protection. While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee frequently works near moving and vibrating mechanical parts.  The employee rarely works in high, precarious places; is rarely exposed to fumes or air borne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and is rarely exposed to risk of electrical shock. The employee will occasionally be exposed to wet or humid conditions and will frequently be exposed to outside weather conditions of extreme heat or cold with occasional ice or snow.

The employee will rarely be working during hours of darkness and will occasionally be near heavy vehicle traffic.  The employee will occasionally be working in or near excavations or confined spaces. The noise level of the work environment is quiet in the office, moderately quiet in the service vehicle, but is noisy in the field.
