This position is assigned to the Drainage Maintenance Division, which is located within the compound of the City of Lawton Public Works Department facilities located at 2100 SW 6th Street.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF POSITION:
- Operates a backhoe and track hoe in the digging of ditches; operates a front-end loader in the loading of trucks and moving dirt.
- Operates a scraper, motor grader and bulldozer for heavy earth moving activities.
- Responds to emergency operations when notified and participates in emergency operation schedule changes for up to 12 hrs/day, or as needed
- Drives trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling and unloading of various equipment and materials.
- Performs required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, including ditch digging, cleaning of ditches and culverts and other drainage ways.
- Assists in the training of subordinate level employees to increase their skills in the maintenance and construction.
- Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.
- Working around utilities and preparation of base roadway, mixing lime into road base with travel mixer, tractor with disk plow, water truck, sheep foot roller.
- Must have knowledge of concrete, mixture and consistency, proper moisture content for soil compaction.
- Operates a survey level and laser level during construction projects.
- Operates a variety of power construction and maintenance equipment used in Drainage Division.
- Uses locating equipment to determine the location of buried water and wastewater lines.
- Performs routine inspection and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor; cleans equipment.
- Insures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools after use.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- Graduation from high school or GED equivalent and four years prior experience related to construction, maintenance, and repair of streets, water lines, sewer lines, or refuse disposal, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Considerable knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in maintenance, construction and repair activities.
- Skill in the operation of tools and equipment including but not limited to: motor grader, bulldozer, back hoe, front end loader, motorized vehicles and equipment, including dump truck, pickup truck, large tractor, bat wing mower, utility truck, saws, pumps, generators, compressors, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, detection devices, mobile radio, phone, ditch witch, survey level, laser level.
- Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to work safely; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and public; ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions; ability to operate survey level and laser level; ability to provide leadership for small crews.
- Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at the 12th grade level.
- Possession of valid Oklahoma Operator's license at date of hire or a valid driver’s license from state of residency, and a Class "A" Oklahoma Commercial driver’s license or pass the written test within 30 days and successfully complete the driving test prior to 6 months from date of hire.
- Tanker Endorsement if needed.

Frequently: Works near moving mechanical parts or in outside weather conditions.

The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock.
The employee must be able to operate equipment and drive vehicles in ALL weather and traffic conditions.
The employee serves as a regular lead person for not more than four entry level unskilled and semi-skilled workers to monitor work flow, review and correct work, and direct work at a job site. May serve as Field Supervisor in the absence of the Superintendent.
The employee is supervised by the Superintendent who provides continuing or individual assignments by indicating generally what is to be completed, limitations, quality and quantity expected, deadlines and priority of assignments. The Superintendent gives additional, specific instructions for new, difficult or unusual assignments. The employee uses initiative in carrying out recurring assignments independently without specific instruction. The Superintendent assures the work is technically accurate and in compliance with established procedures.

Licensed commercial drivers are required to register and create a profile with the Federal Motor Carrier Clearinghouse at https://clearinghouse.fmcsa.dot.gov/register. Positive drug screen information shall be reported in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Clearinghouse. Periodic queries shall be ran on all commercial licensed drivers.
