Salary: $16.73 - $18.28 per hour DOQ
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF POSITION:
- Drives trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling and unloading of various equipment and materials and operates heavy equipment.
- Performs required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, including pavement cutting, ditch digging, manhole and line cleaning, main and pipe replacement/repair, laying and backfilling and operates a backhoe and track hoe in the digging of ditches; operates a front end loader in the loading of trucks and moving dirt along with pipe bursting and boring equipment.
- Cuts, fits, lays, repairs, taps, cleans and flushes water mains, pipes, gates and fittings on repair of mains and services and installation of services, assists in shutting off broken sections of water mains.
- Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.
- Performs labor involved in construction and maintenance projects.
- Supervises the installation and maintenance of sewer mains and endcaps for a 5 to 7 man crew.
- Maintains materials and equipment inventory.
- Insures proper preventative maintenance on equipment assigned to activity and cleans equipment to insure the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools after use.
- Operates a vacuum truck, flush truck, rod truck, dump truck and any other equipment related to wastewater collections and maintenance.
- Operates a survey level and laser level during construction projects.
- Assists in the training of lower level employees to increase their skills in the maintenance, construction and repair of water and sewer facilities.
- Uses locating equipment to determine the location of buried water and wastewater lines.
- Responds to emergency situations.
- Must enter confined spaces.
- Set up traffic control barricades according to Manuel of Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
- Other duties as assigned.

- Graduation from high school or GED equivalent is preferred and three (3) years prior experience related to construction, maintenance, and repair of streets, water lines, sewer lines, or refuge disposal; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Considerable knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in maintenance, construction and repair activities of water lines, sewer lines
- Skill in the operation of the following tools and equipment, backhoe, track hoe, front end loader, pipe bursting equipment, boring equipment, fusion machine, motorized vehicles and equipment, including dump truck, pickup truck, utility truck, jet inductor truck; man lift; saws; pumps; generators; compressors; common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches; detection devices; mobile radio; phone; ditch witch; survey level; laser level.
- Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to work safely; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and public; ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions; ability to operate survey level and laser level; ability to operate television equipment in main inspection; ability to provide leadership for small crews.
- Knowledge of the materials, methods, techniques, tools and equipment used in the areas of specialization. Knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and safety precautions necessary for the safe conduct of work and equipment operation. Ability to plan and layout work, supervise a group of subordinates, obtain effective results and meet established schedules. Ability to maintain required operating records and prepare reports.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates and the public. Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions and to work from sketches and engineer plans. Ability to make decisions recognizing established precedent, and practices and to use resourcefulness and tact in meeting new problems. Ability to perform grade and elevation mathematical calculations.
- Possession of valid driver’s license at date of hire. Possession of a Class "A" Oklahoma Commercial driver’s license or pass the written test within 30 days and obtain the license within six (6) months of employment.
- Class D Certification in Wastewater within one year of date of hire; willingness to obtain a higher certification.
This position is assigned to the Sewer Construction Division, which is located within the compound of the City of Lawton Public Works Department facilities located at 2100 SW 6th Street.

The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock.
The employee must be able to operate equipment and drive vehicles in ALL weather and traffic conditions.
A crew of 5 - 7 personnel.
Employee performs duties under the supervision of a Field Construction Supervisor and Construction Superintendent who gives daily work assignments, general guidance, directions and assistance.

Licensed commercial drivers are required to register and create a profile with the Federal Motor Carrier Clearinghouse at https://clearinghouse.fmcsa.dot.gov/register. Positive drug screen information shall be reported in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Clearinghouse. Periodic queries shall be ran on all commercial licensed drivers.
