On June 19, 2022, Lawton, OK, and our nation will reflect on 157 years into the past to commemorate and celebrate the freedom of enslaved people in the United States at the end of the Civil War. It was June 19, 1865, when Major General Gordon Granger landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the last enslaved Americans were now free. Note This was two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
This year's Juneteenth for Lawton Fort Sill and Southwest Oklahoma has a two-fold significance. This is the first year Juneteenth is celebrated as a national holiday and this year is the first year we celebrate without our beloved local Juneteenth founder and organizer, Mr. Albert Johnson, Sr. As we commemorate and celebrate, may God bless us all.
