Arts Coordinator, Arts & Humanities - 3377

Career Purpose

Provides quality service, resources, outreach and programming to the citizens of the Lawton Fort Sill Community so that all may have quality of life and economic opportunities. Participates in the creation, establishment, organization and implementation of arts and humanities programs for the City of Lawton Arts and Humanities Division. Acts as a liaison in support of film production support. Oversees management of the City of Lawton culturally related property such as the Fine Art Collection.


Effective August 12, 2021, all applicants hired by the City of Lawton will be required to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19.  If the applicant is not fully vaccinated prior to their hiring date, the employee will have ninety (90) days to become fully vaccinated for COVID-19.  If the employee fails to become fully vaccinated within the ninety (90) days, it shall be grounds for termination.  Proof of vaccination will be required and a copy placed in the employees medical file.


  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with arts and cultural organizations, local governmental agencies, staff, and citizen.
  • Acts as Liaison to local, state, and federal offices as needed in support of programming
  • Supports economic development of area’s creative industries to include but not limited to film, music, education, visual arts, performing arts, and humanities
  • Participates in planning, organizing, coordinating, and facilitating City of Lawton and cosponsored programs and events
  • Creates marketing and advertising plans, writes press releases, articles, and produces digital media, and assists in creation and design of division promotional materials
  • Participates in public speaking engagements, including press and media interviews
  • Maintains the COL website for the Arts & Humanities Division
    • Including but not limited to the Lawton Arts & Humanities Council’s programs such as International Festival, Student Performances, Lawton Cultural Award, and the One to Six Art Purchase Award
  • Maintains social media sites for the Arts & Humanities Division, Lawton Arts & Humanities Council,  
    • Including but not limited to the Lawton Arts & Humanities Council’s programs such as International Festival, Student Performances, Lawton Cultural Award, and the One to Six Art Purchase Award
  • Oversees contact database for area press and media, Fort Sill Public Affairs Officer (PAO) and Family Morale Welfare and Recreation (FMWR), state and federal offices, and cultural organizations.
  • Maintains and manages Film Support Request Program – City of Lawton owned property
  • Manages City of Lawton cultural property and database such as the Fine Art Collection
  • Assists with grant research, writing, and reports
  • Works flexible hours to accommodate evening and weekend events


  • Develops programing to include finding performers/artists, booking of performances and scheduling of events
  • Provides outreach and conducts and coordinates educational opportunities for artists/performers, organizations, businesses, and educators
  • Advocates for the visual and performing arts as well as humanities industries
  • Creates and maintains various databases, files, and supplies for various visual and performing arts programs
  • Researches various topics related to history, professional advancements in the industry, etc.
  • Secures venues, equipment, and provides or coordinates technical assistance for events
  • Assists in coordination of stages, artists, and performers for annual events such as Lawton Fort Sill Freedom Festival and International Festival, performing duties of stage manager as needed
  • Attends monthly meetings of various community organizations
  • Recommends equipment and materials for support of visual and performing arts programs and initiatives based on division needs
  • Develops surveys based on program goals that provide a measure of qualitative and quantitative experiences by patrons, artists, and vendors.
  • Uses basic statistics to analyze data and create presentations
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Arts & Humanities Administrator

  • Preferred graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in Arts Management, Project Management, Business Administration, Public Administration, or closely related field preferred or equivalent work experience in the Arts and Humanities industry.
  • Skill in the operation of basic office tools and equipment: personal computer with various software such as MS Office, Work, Excel, PowerPoint, Website, fax machine, copy machine, and telephone.
  • Preferred experience of film production from pre-production to post-production
  • Preferred experience in lighting and sound operation
  • Preferred experience in use of camera and other recording devices and compatibility with websites and software
  • Awareness of copyright, trademark, and laws, otherwise known as Intellectual Property
  • Skill in writing press releases and producing promotional materials
  • Knowledge of nonprofit and for-profit operations of community arts/cultural organizations
  • Ability to relate to people of diverse backgrounds and deal effectively in a team environment
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines and manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Effectively organize and coordinate events and programs

The position is generally performed in side an office setting, but may require infrequent exposure to adverse weather conditions.  The employee may occasionally be exposed to hot, wet and/or humid conditions during special events.

The noise level in the work environment is usually quite while in the office, and moderate to loud when performing duties outside of the office setting.   


The position requires heavy contact with the public who are typically individuals and/or groups that have, or could have, some impact on program or policy matters.  The purpose of the contacts is to plan and coordinate work efforts; provide input and advice, and resolve problems by influencing and motivating.  Media contacts are frequent.
