COL Independence Day, 2020
As Independence Day approaches, the City of Lawton would like to kindly remind citizens that fireworks discharge is prohibited in Lawton city limits and on all Lawton properties, to include Lake Lawtonka and Lake Ellsworth, in accordance with Lawton City Code Chapter 11: Fire Prevention. This excludes any professional fireworks displays that have been approved to take place by the City of Lawton.
If citizens are discharging fireworks outside of City limits with permission, they are advised to abide by safety tips that can be found at lawtonok.gov/sites/default/files/publications/2020-06/FireworksSafetyTips.pdf.
Due to safety concerns and budgetary constraints, the 2020 Lawton Fort Sill Freedom Festival – originally scheduled to take place June 27 at Elmer Thomas Park – has been cancelled. This was a unanimous committee and Lawton City Council decision. Accumulated festival funding for this year will be put toward the 2021 Lawton Fort Sill Freedom Festival.
Due to Independence Day falling on a Saturday, most City of Lawton offices will be closed to observe the holiday on Friday, July 3. There will be NO trash collection on July 3. Trash collection will resume for residents on their next regularly scheduled pickup day. Please note that the Lawton Landfill will be open on July 3 and closed on July 4; and that the Lawton Public Library will be closed July 3 - July 5.
Emergency services, such as that provided by police and fire, will remain available to citizens as always.
Regular business hours and operations for all City of Lawton facilities will resume Monday, July 6.
The Lakes Division Office will be closed July 3; select Lakes Division employees may still be on-site for usage fee collection on July 4. Citizens are reminded that no glass containers are permitted at the lakes. The Day-Use Area of Lake Lawtonka will be closed by sundown.
Though the City of Lawton Municipal Pool and Wading Pool have remained closed due to budgetary constraints, the Elmer Thomas Park Splash Pad (2nd and Ferris) and the Clement Washington Sr. Spray Park (6th and Belmont) opened the last week of June 2020. Holiday hours will be:
OPEN 7/3/20: 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Elmer Thomas Park Splash Pad & Noon to 5 p.m. at the Clement Washington Sr. Spray Park
The City of Lawton wishes you a wonderful and safe Independence Day. Thank you for your cooperation.
