The Youth & Family Affairs Committee of the City of Lawton has made applications for funding assistance available to nonprofits offering youth services and will collaboratively coordinate support training sessions for applicable organizations on July 1 and July 20, 2021:
- TRAINING SESSION I: 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. 7/1/21 at Banquet Room of Lawton City Hall, 212 SW Ninth Street
- TRAINING SESSION II: 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. 7/20/21 at Johnson Theatre inside of Ross Hall at Cameron University, 2800 W. Gore Boulevard
"My hope for the committee is to build a structure of support, provide building blocks of equity and increase youth resilience for our at-risk youth population and their families for many years to come," said Councilwoman Onreka Johnson, Ward 7 City Council representative and chairwoman of the committee.
Johnson said approximately $6 million of voter-approved PROPEL CIP funds have been allocated for initiatives of the Youth & Family Affairs Committee. This funding will be distributed over the life of the program. The soon-to-be held training sessions are intended to assist interested nonprofit leaders and volunteers in completing the application process to be considered to receive funding. A copy of the application and all needed materials and information can be found by visiting http://bit.do/YFACLawtonApp. The United Way of Southwest Oklahoma has partnered with the committee to teach the training sessions. Applicants are welcome to attend either session. There is no cost to attend.
"We want to enhance programs that are existing and help to establish new programs for our youth," Johnson said.
Other individuals serving on the Youth & Family Affairs Committee include: Jeff Elbert, Dr. Robert Gorrell, Rick Lowe, Brenda Myers, Dianne Owens, Associate District Judge Lisa Shaw, Ernie Sherman, and Dr. Willie Smith. The committee was officially established by approval of the Lawton City Council in February 2021.
