Lawton named Certified Healthy Community, Excellence Level

3 February 2020

The City of Lawton is now a four-time Oklahoma Excellence Certified Healthy Community – the highest of three levels of certifications – due to its continuous commitment to promote wellness, encourage the adoption of healthy behaviors and establish safe and supportive environments.

“Lawton was the first metropolitan community to achieve this level and we have done so four out of the last five years,” said Richard Rogalski, Community Service Director for the City of Lawton. “Being recognized statewide for the exceptional work our community has been doing is certainly rewarding, but the real achievement is that the actions we are taking and services we are providing to our citizens will help result in long-term, positive health outcomes for our children.”

Certified Healthy recipients are recognized as leaders in their communities or state for making health and wellness a priority. They have exhibited “outstanding efforts and achievements” in actively creating communities that are a healthy place to live, work, learn and play. There are several categories of entities and communities in the program. Initiators of this program include the Oklahoma Turning Point Council, Oklahoma State Department of Health, Oklahoma State Chamber and the Oklahoma Academy for State Goals.

The City of Lawton has received the Excellence rating in 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2019. The application process is overseen by the Planning Department of the City of Lawton.

City officials will attend a ceremony to be recognized for this achievement in Spring 2020.
