During Tuesday’s City Council meeting, Mayor Booker presented a proclamation declaring March 2023 as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month.
The proclamation aims to recognize individuals living with developmental disabilities as valuable members of our community who contribute to society in countless ways. They deserve respect, inclusion, and access to opportunities to reach their full potential.
Millions of Americans live with developmental disabilities and face unique challenges that require special care, support, and understanding.
This proclamation is an important reminder of the efforts of advocates, families, caregivers, and service providers like Darien’s Voice Foundation, who work tirelessly to improve the lives of individuals living with developmental disabilities through empowerment, education, and support.
Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month presents an opportunity to promote awareness and understanding of developmental disabilities and the issues affecting individuals living with developmental disabilities and the individuals that support them. It is beneficial to engage in discussions, share stories, and learn more about how to create a more inclusive and accommodating society.
By recognizing and supporting individuals with developmental disabilities, we can promote a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive society. Together we can strive toward a world where everyone, regardless of ability, is valued and respected.
