Whereas, each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America; and
Whereas, the observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17,1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402; and
Whereas, during Hispanic Heritage Month, we take the opportunity to honor all Americans of Hispanic descent and to acknowledge their past and ongoing contributions to the success and growth of our Nation. Hispanic Americans are the largest minority group in the United States today, and generations of Hispanic Americans have consistently helped make our country strong and prosperous; and
Whereas, this year's theme, "'Esperanza: A Celebration of Hispanic Heritage and Hope", encourages us to reflect on the legacy of Hispanic people who have influenced our nation's history and serve today as leaders in all aspects of our national life from the Supreme Court and halls of Congress to boardrooms and Main Streets across all of the United States; and
Whereas, Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated in many ways, with events such as parades, art exhibitions, concerts, and traditional Hispanic food fairs.
Therefore, I, Stan Booker, Mayor, City of Lawton, do hereby recognize September 15 to October 15, 2021, as Hispanic Heritage Month, and encourage all residents of the Lawton Fort Sill community to celebrate our unique and vibrant history and recommit ourselves to a shared future of healthy, peaceful, safe, and sustainable communities for all.
