Live Theater for Children and Families

Bringing Children's Theatre to school age students and the public!

Since 1975, the goal of the Student Performance Project is to introduce the arts, specifically live theatre, to young students and families with shows featuring song & dance while encouraging audience participation.

Each year, the Lawton Arts & Humanities Council works to find a theatre production company that offer shows geared for only elementary school students and available for daytime shows. Key to the selection is that the show is based on a popular book with connections for classroom curriculum such as Communication and Language Arts, Literature-Based, Music, Relationships and Family.

Because the special day-time performances sold out easily, the Lawton Arts & Humanities Council decided to include an evening performance that was open to the public. Ticket rates are low which allows families, grandparents and others to have an affordable evening out with their children.

Attending live theater enhances literary knowledge, tolerance, and empathy among students, according to studies over film presentations. Students who attend live performances are better able to recognize and appreciate what other people think and feel. For many students, this is their first opportunity to experience professional theatre in a performing arts center.

Past presentations have included "Peter Rabbit (and Benjamin Bunny), "Peter Pan", "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe", "Just So Stories", "Junie B. Jones", and "Curious George".
