2018 Black Heritage Community Calendar


Please join the City of Lawton for 2018 Black Heritage Month celebrations. This year's theme is "African Americans in Times of War." The schedule is as follows:

  • FEB 1: Signing of the Proclamation by Mayor Fred Fitch, Lawton High School Cafeteria, 5:30 p.m.
  • FEB 3: 39th Annual Dr. Wynn Miss Black CU Pageant, Cameron University Theatre, 7 p.m.
  • FEB 6: African American Heritage Month Teen Conference, MacArthur Middle School and Eisenhower Middle School, 1:30 p.m.
  • FEB 8: African American Heritage Month Teen Conference, Central Middle School and Tomlinson Middle School, 1:30 p.m.
  • FEB 12: NAACP 109th "Founders Day," NAACP Office, noon
  • FEB 17: Project Alpha "Male Teen Responsibilities," Cameron University Science Building, 10 a.m.
  • FEB 17: Black Heritage Banquet, Cameron University's McCasland Ballroom, 6:30 p.m.
  • FEB 18: Soul Food Fest, St. John Famiily Life Center, noon
  • FEB 18: Community Black History Program Observance Service, Greater Galilee Baptist Church, 3:30 p.m.
  • FEB 19: NAACP Lawton Youth Council "Movie Matinee," New Jerusalem Baptist Church, 11 a.m.
  • FEB 22: Fort Sill Black Heritage Luncheon, Patriot Club on Fort Sill, 11:30 a.m.
  • FEB 22: Eighth Annual Soulful Story, Lawton City Hall, 7 p.m. (Dinner at 6, tickets - $15)
  • FEB 23: Black Heritage Stamp Unveiling, Main Post Office, 4 p.m.
  • FEB 24: High School Black History Quiz Bowl, Cameron University's Ross Hall, 10 a.m.
  • FEB 26: "Color Purple" by Marsha Norman, Lawton High School, 6 p.m.
  • FEB 27: "Wealthy African American before the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863," Cameron University's Buddy Green Room, 7:15 p.m.
