2018 One to Six Art Purchase Award Recipient Announced

Each year, the City of Lawton and the Lawton Arts & Humanities Council (LAHC) sponsors the One to Six Art Purchase Award where one artist's work is given as awards to six winners of the Lawton Cultural Awards. The Lawton Arts & Humanities Council's Nominating Committee serves as jury for this art purchase award, making recommendations to the council.

They are pleased to announce that Jan Stratton is the recipient of the 2018 One to Six Art Purchase Award.  While Jan’s contributions to journalism and broadcasting in the state of Oklahoma for over 30 years are legendary, Jan has also held the same dedication to excellence in the visual and performing arts.  She began taking watercolor lessons after her retirement in 2014 from Medicine Park artist Tom Biggs (2011 One to Six Purchase Award recipient).  That sparked an interest in painting that fills her days and has found her setting up her easel in Paris at The Tuileries and in the gardens of Monet’s Giverny and more.  She now also enjoys painting in oil.  In addition to Biggs, she’s studied with nationally recognized artists such as Matthew Hughes, Katherine Liontas-Warren, Christine Lashley, Mary Whyte, Kathleen Dunphy and Qiang Huang.

Jan notes that, “Painting nature brings its own unique challenges.   I adore plein air painting—the beautiful scenery, the fresh air, the light—but unpredictable weather and, yes, all that GREEN, can challenge the best studio artist.  Challenge or not, I can lose myself for hours at the easel, indoors or out, because I love it all.

I consider myself a representational artist with a nod to Impressionism and I try hard to keep my work from being too predictable.  While I always try to be technically accurate, art should have energy and life so I’m working to incorporate more painterly brush work. ”

Her art work has been selected into fine art festivals such as the Medicine Park Art Walk for the past three years and she is a former Arts for All Emerging Artist at their annual spring festival. This year, Jan has been selected for the Museum of the Western Prairie’s 2018 Holiday Market and the Chisholm Trail Art Council’s 2018 Holiday Art Show.  In addition, her art has been exhibited at the Lawton Community Theatre, Pride Gallery, Leslie Powell Gallery, St. Paul’s Annual Art Show and she currently has several of her paintings on exhibit at The Silver Spoon restaurant in Lawton.

Jan’s other endeavors include acting and singing in dozens of theater productions over the years in Virginia, Kansas, Fort Sill and Lawton. She most recently added the roles of Mother Superior in the LCT musical “Nunsense” and Frau Blucher in another LCT Musical, “Young Frankenstein”.  She’s also performed for and with the Lawton Philharmonic Orchestra in the concert versions of “Oklahoma!”, “The Music Man” and “I Do, I Do”.

Jan still emcees events, is on the Arts For All Board and is on the board of Lawton’s Oklahoma Healthy Aging Initiative. She is married to retired Comanche County Judge Bill Stratton.  They have a combined family of six children and 15 grandchildren.  When Jan is not painting, she loves to travel and often tries to combine the two.

Jan Stratton’s artwork will be presented to the 2018 Lawton Cultural Award winners.  She and the 2018 Lawton Cultural Award recipients will be recognized at the annual Arts for All Kick-Off Fund Drive Luncheon, Friday, February 22, 11:30am, Lawton Country Club, 4601 W Gore Blvd, in Lawton.
