Amenities to be upgraded at local parks

City of Lawton Parks & Recreation reports that outdoor areas across the community are receiving major upgrades to improve recreational amenities for Lawtonians of all ages.

New digital scoreboards were received this week by staff and are set to be installed at the Grandview Sports Complex, Eastside Park and the Louise D. McMahon Park in the next 45 days. A total of 12 remote-controlled scoreboards were purchased and include timekeeping features.

“This is great because it will now allow for coaches, parents and team members to see and track the same time,” said Parks & Recreation Supervisor Reggie Seaton, who explained that athletic officials previously kept time for games at these fields.

In Downtown Lawton, renovations to the disc golf course at Elmer Thomas Park will begin Monday, February 4. This will close the course until further notice but Seaton is confident that renovations will be worth the wait.

“The course will be redesigned for a better playing experience and also feature 18 new state-of-the-art disc golf baskets,” he said. “The baskets we are replacing are more than 25 years old.”

Both projects are funded through a “Sports & Recreation” account – a result of a change in sports fees that was approved by Lawton City Council in 2016.
