Those who have loved ones who were laid to rest at Highland Cemetery can now search for and visit their resting place virtually. The City of Lawton’s Geographic Information System (GIS) Division has created an application that allows users to search for names, see information and view pictures of the monuments and gravesites located at Lawton’s Highland Cemetery.

Earlier this year, City Manager Michael Cleghorn tasked the City’s GIS Division to gather and organize cemetery data so it could be presented to the public in a way that would allow them to conduct name searches and view images of the property.

“Making this data available digitally to the public is just another way the City of Lawton is moving forward with its technological transformation,” Cleghorn said. “But this specific data also has sentimental value to our citizens. This can help citizens easily locate loved ones to visit them in-person or virtually. We realize how important this is, especially during a time when many individuals are looking to limit community movement due to COVID-19."

In June 2020, the City’s GIS Division, Engineering Department and Cemetery Sexton met to discuss ways to collect the data and display it on a digital map. According to Judy Franco, GIS Supervisor, the division’s GIS Analyst, Haley Herrick, created the data collector app and worked with Engineering to retrieve spatial data and images to link it to the data available in the cemetery’s database.

The application was made public on Oct. 26 and is being updated regularly. A progress bar is available on the main screen so users can monitor the project’s progress.

Since the cemetery has well over 16,000 sites,” Franco said, “it will take some time to feature every site. However, the application is updated every two weeks as each site is collected and verified.”

The Highland Cemetery application can be viewed on the City of Lawton’s website on the GIS Division’s homepage or at this link: https://colgis.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=b082262eb39b4c378b35dd993c3190cf
