At Tuesday’s City Council meeting, Sunny Days Sunshine Center accepted a proclamation presented by Mayor Stan Booker recognizing the month of April to be Autism Awareness & Acceptance Month.
Sunny Day Sunshine Center is a pediatric therapy clinic that works alongside families to help all children develop into their potential. Established in 2011 by Aileen Sadler and Greta Worthington, the center was created because they saw the need for more comprehensive pediatric therapy services. They offer comprehensive speech, occupational, physical, and feeding therapy for children from birth through eighteen.
The proclamation states it is important to increase awareness of early warning signs of autism so we can assist them in any way necessary. Each citizen affected by autism should have access to reliable information, support, and opportunities to live up to their greatest potential.
Autism affects 1 in 44 children and affects each person differently, often resulting in unique strengths, abilities, and challenges. It can cause difficulties in verbal and nonverbal communication, social interaction, and behaviors. This often results in medical conditions that could impact the quality of life.
The City of Lawton recognizes the importance of a supportive community for citizens with autism and their families. They encourage others to become more aware and understanding of the effects and livelihood of autism.
