Events honoring the past, present, and future of the City of Lawton and its citizens will be held starting Tuesday, August 1 through Saturday, August 12. These events are sponsored by the City of Lawton, Lawton Rangers, Pioneer Women’s Club of Lawton and Lawton Heritage Association.
Kick off begins with the Preservation Oklahoma’s traveling exhibition “Preservation 50: Oklahoma Celebrates the National Historic Preservation Act” on display in the Lawton City Hall Lobby, August 1 - August 11. The City of Lawton has four properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places; Lawton City Hall (Lawton High School), Carnegie Library/Old Town Hall, Armory Building and the Central Fire Station.
Mayor Fred Fitch is pleased to invite the public to Lawton’s Birthday Reception and Ceremony to be held in the Banquet Hall at City Hall (212 SW 9th St.) on Thursday, August 3 at 5:30 pm. During the ceremony there will be three important recognitions; the Lawton Award in Excellence recognizing the contributions of Gilbert “Gib” Gibson. This special award is presented by the Mayor to an individual who exemplifies outstanding excellence in service to community, state, and nation. The Lawton Rangers and the Pioneer Women’s Club will also be recognized for 79 years of service to our community.
Festivities continue on Saturday, August 5 with the annual Lawton Rangers Breakfast starting at 6:30am in the L.O. Ranch House located at 2004 SE 60th St. For $5.00 you can get a hearty all you can eat meal and a morning of community fun!
Then at 10 am on August 5, the Pioneer Women’s Club of Lawton will host the annual Pioneer Woman’s Memorial at the Ritter-Gray Funeral Chapel located at 632 SW C Avenue to honor all pioneers.
The birthday festivities continue from noon to 3:00 pm on Sunday, August 6. All can tour the historic Mattie Beal Home’s 14-room mansion at no cost. The Mattie Beal Home, located at 1008 SW 5th Street, is owned and maintained by the Lawton Heritage Association and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Mattie Beal was a 22-year old telephone operator in Wichita, Kansas, who decided to register for the land lottery in the Lawton area in 1901. Mattie Beal’s name was the second one drawn and her life changed. Now “land rich” she received hundreds of marriage proposals but married Lawton businessman, Charles Payne. Together they built a mansion in 1907-1909 that became the social center and architectural highlight of the young city of Lawton. For more information, call 580-678-3156.
The Lawton Rangers PRCA Rodeo kicks off on Wednesday, August 9 nightly through Saturday, August 12 at the L.O. Ranch Arena located at 2004 SE 60th Street. The rodeo is one of the top 50 rodeos in the U.S. Over 400 of the most skilled cowboys and cowgirls in the country will compete in tie-down roping, team roping, steer wrestling, bareback bronc riding, saddle bronc riding, bull riding and barrel racing. Grab your cowboy hat and boots and head out to the Lawton Rangers PRCA Rodeo each night to watch edge-of-your-seat rodeo action, as well as live entertainment.
Ticket information: Advance tickets are $12.00 (for all nights). Advanced tickets can be purchased online at www.lawtonrangers.com or from any of the queen contestants. Tickets may also be purchased at EZ Go, Crutcher’s Western Wear, Ruben’s Shoes, and Atwood’s Ranch & Home. Advanced tickets at Ft. Sill Adventure Travel are $10 with Military DOD ID.
Wednesday is $5.00 per car for as many people who can safely ride in your car/truck, Thursday and Friday nights get your tickets for $15.00 at the gate and Saturday night gate price is $20.00. Children’s tickets can be purchased at the gate for Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Children 6 – 12 years are $7.00 and children 5 years and under are free.
The Rodeo Dance lineup for Friday, August 11, is the Allen Biffle Band and Saturday, August 12, is the Waylon Holley Band. Dance tickets must be purchased at the dance ticket booth.
Lawton Rangers’ Rodeo Parade!
Saturday, August 12, 10am Downtown Lawton
The public is invited to join the Lawton Rangers as they bring their Lawton Rangers Rodeo Parade to downtown Lawton. The Parade will start at 10 am on Saturday, August 12, the last day of the Lawton Ranger’s rodeo. Line-up will begin at 8am in the northwest corner of Central Mall. .
All individuals, businesses, civic groups, school groups, military units, riding clubs, and political candidates are welcome to enter and entries are free. A $500 Grand Award will be given to the entry that best represents the parade theme. Three other awards of $150 will be given to the best riding club, best float, and best marching unit.
Parade activities include contests for best dressed Cowboy, Cowgirl, and Rodeo Clown for kids under six beginning at 9:30am at the reviewing stand in front of City National Bank. The Marlow Gunfighters will be performing at the reviewing stand after the kid’s contests.
The parade will travel west down C Ave. passed City Hall to 9th Street, then South to D Ave. The parade will turn east on D Avenue, pass the reviewing stand between 5th and 6th Streets, and return to the Mall parking lot.
