Lawton City leaders would like to welcome Col. James Peay IV as Fort Sill’s newest Garrison commander.

Col. Peay took over duties from Col. Rhett Taylor, who entered the position in 2020. In Col. Taylor’s time as Garrison Commander, he also served as the Fort Sill liaison to the City of Lawton.

“Col. Rhett Taylor was an asset to the Lawton-Fort Sill community,” said City Manager Michael Cleghorn. “Having a close relationship with the Garrison commander and having him part of City Council helped strengthen relationships and provided a conduit for success between Lawton and Fort Sill.”

Col. Peay’s duties as Garrison Commander on July 8, but attended his first City Council meeting on July 12.

"My family and I are excited to be here and be part of the community,” said Col. James Peay, Fort Sill Garrison commander. “We're looking forward to continue to grow and foster the relationship that Col. Taylor has really developed over the past couple of years. And, I think there's an immense amount of opportunity both on- and off-post to be successful and work with each other.”

Col. Peay will pick up where Col. Taylor left off, ensuring the Garrison has a better understanding of big projects happening in Lawton and vice versa.

“We’d like to welcome Col. Peay and his family to the community,” Cleghorn said. “I look forward to working with him and continuing the great work established by his predecessors.”
