Construction on the Highland Cemetery Arch has officially been completed!
However, the stone arch entrance will not be reopened until the streetlight can be replaced. In the meantime, the gate will be closed, but the barricades have been removed to improve the appearance of the area.
"This project was long overdue, and I'm glad it is finally completed and looks great," Parks & Recreations Director Christine James said. "All of the original rocks were reused, and it's amazing to see the history come back to life. As soon as the street light is replaced by the Streets Department, the gates will be opened, and the arch entrance will be able to be used once again by the public."
James said the truck entrance remains at the south end of the cemetery, and future improvements are being planned to help protect the stone arch for years to come.
The contractor will attend the City Council meeting on January 24 to go over the process of completion of the repairs, per the request of Councilman Hampton.
