As we approach the winter months, Lawton City Council is ensuring dogs are not left out in the cold.

During Tuesday’s City Council meeting, Councilmembers voted 7-1 to approve an ordinance establishing that dogs are not to be left outdoors and unattended for more than 30 minutes when temperature is below 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

The ordinance excludes dogs specifically bred for colder temperatures, to include breeds such as German Shepherds, Siberian Huskies, Great Pyrenees’, and Saint Bernards, to name a few.

The ordinance went into effect upon approval, on November 14, 2023. It will be enforced by Lawton Animal Welfare’s Animal Welfare Officers, and any fines would be issued at the discretion of the municipal judge.
