Lawton City Council approved a conceptual design for the Youth Sports Complex during the regular-scheduled City Council meeting on 12/14/2021. Stantec Architecture Inc. and members of the Youth Sports Complex Committee presented a presentation of the conceptual design for the Youth Sports Complex.

The conceptual design features an 86,000-square-foot building that houses multiple basketball courts, an indoor soccer field, walking track and kitchen/concession area. Within the conceptual design, the Youth Sports Complex will be placed in Elmer Thomas Park southwest of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and east of the playground, overlooking Lake Helen. The Youth Sports Complex was a main proponent of the 2019 Capital Improvements Plan (CIP) that was approved by voters in February 2019. The CIP included $20 million for projects related to recreation and sports with $8 million specifically for an indoor youth sports complex.

Now with council's approval of the conceptual design, the Youth Sports Complex Committee will move forward, beginning next year with a more in-depth design phase, public engagement opportunities and possible grants research.
