Emergency Communications assistance, COL staffing levels

COL 35

Published 8/13/21

In an effort to best protect and serve citizens, Lawton firefighters and various staff members who are familiar with the inner-workings of Emergency Communications have assisted in answering calls at the Emergency Communications Center since early August. No stations/trucks have had to stand down to provide this assistance.

There are currently 10 vacancies at the Emergency Communications Center. The City of Lawton has more than 100 vacancies across all departments and COVID-related illnesses further reduce workforce numbers during any given week. City leadership continue to encourage all staff members and citizens to become vaccinated as vaccinations greatly reduce the chances of serious illness, complications, hospitalizations, and death. The public is advised that the City of Lawton is approaching critical levels of staffing in many departments. Efforts by way of incentives, marketing, recruitment, and education have been made and will continue to be made to fill vacancies and provide essential services.

There will be a Press Conference at 3 p.m. on Monday, August 16, 2021, at Lawton City Hall to further discuss the situation. All members of the media are invited to attend.
