Lawton earns "Class 1" Rating

Lawtonians may soon see a decrease in property insurance as the ISO (Insurance Services Office) has relayed that the City of Lawton has improved by two categorical ratings within the Fire Suppression Rating Schedule this year, placing the city in the topmost ranking of “Class 1” – an honor that only two other cities in Oklahoma have attained. Nationwide, there are currently 46,042 ISO publications and only 241 of them are Class 1.

American cities are placed into one of 10 class categories each year – with “1” representing the topmost and safest city ranking. The score is determined by ISO’s Public Protection Classification (PPC) assessment, which evaluates the quality of public fire protection in thousands of fire protection areas across the country. This program recognizes that a community’s investment in fire mitigation is a proven and reliable predicator of future fire losses.

Fire department capabilities, water supply systems, emergency communication and community efforts are all considered during the process of PPC evaluation.

“ISO appreciates the high level of cooperation extended by local officials during the entire PPC survey process,” said Alex Shubert, National Processing Center Manager for ISO.

Lawton Fire, Police and Water, as well as City Management, were contacted in late January about this achievement. Lawton was previously categorized as “Class 3.”

ISO representatives will make a presentation to City officials in honor of this achievement at the Feb. 27 Lawton City Council meeting. Details and specifics surrounding rating methodology will be made available to those in attendance at this time.

“This achievement will benefit the citizens of Lawton tremendously and it validates some of the decisions and improvements we have been working toward for several years,” said Lawton Fire Chief Dewayne Burk. “The addition of Fire Station 8, along with other improvements in Fire Training, upgrades in Fire Apparatus, water distribution system, and our E-911 dispatch are all contributing factors to the improved ISO rating classification.”
