Redistricting Commission to Host Public Hearing

The Lawton Redistricting Commission will host a public hearing at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2022, in the City Hall Auditorium.

The purpose of the public hearing is for citizens to give input on the proposed ward redistricting map for the City of Lawton that the commission voted on during a meeting that took place Dec. 16. CLICK HERE to view the proposed redistricting map.

The public hearing will be an opportunity for the commission to receive public comments from Lawton citizens regarding the proposed redistricting map. This meeting will begin a required 10-day period before the resolution can be approved by at least five affirming votes from the commission. The commission approved a public notice period from Dec. 16, 2021, through Jan. 6, 2022.

As outlined in the Charter of the City of Lawton, the Lawton Redistricting Commission is to convene every tenth year upon receipt of the results of the U.S. Census, and at other times it deems desirable, to readjust the wards and their boundaries to comply with the following requirements:

  1. Each ward shall be formed of compact, contiguous territory with boundaries drawn to reflect and respond to communities of common interest, ethnic background, and physical boundaries, to the extent reasonably possible; and
  2. The wards shall be substantially equal in population.
