Special Council Meeting, 8/27/19

There will be a Special Meeting of the Lawton City Council at 5 p.m. on Aug. 27 at Lawton City Hall preceding the regularly scheduled Council meeting at 6 p.m.

During the workshop-style session, the Council will “consider discussing the potential extension of the 2015 and 2016 Sales Tax Capital Improvement Programs (CIPs) and provide direction as necessary.” Mayor Stan Booker said discussion may include considering a schedule leading up to a recommended completion date of council for a revamped CIP: October 1, 2019. This date would give ample time for City staff to compose and edit ballot wording and receive approval via Bond Council Review, while ensuring the November filing date for a January election is met at the Comanche County Election Board.

“Also to be discussed is a possible joint listening session between the City Council, Parks and Recreation Commission, and Parks & Recreation staff concerning primarily, but not limited to, city athletic fields,” Booker said. “We are looking for an opportunity for citizens to come forward with ideas and suggestions on how to improve these amenities.”

The Lawton Economic Development Corporation will conclude the meeting with a presentation on infrastructure needs that are vital to growing the job base in Lawton.

Projects that may be considered as part of a new CIP, as discussed to date, include a new athletic complex, sewer and water line upgrades, and various community youth initiatives. At a later date, community members will have the opportunity to offer input on the program.
