Christmas is fast approaching, and the Lawton Fire Department is issuing some helpful reminders to keep everyone safe this holiday season. But they are also putting those reminders into action by providing free smoke detectors to homeowners & renters in need.
LFD partners with Vision 2020 & the Red Cross to make that happen.
With an increased fire risk in the winter, testing your smoke detectors monthly and replacing the battery each year is vital.
In case of a fire, Lawton Fire Marshal Heath Want recommends you have an escape plan with exit points for every room in your home, especially for those with children. Have a designated spot to meet, whether it’s the mailbox or your neighbor’s home. Conduct fire drills with your family to practice these escape routes, and always remember to stop, drop, and roll.
Colder weather and the holidays bring people together, so be aware of increased potential fire hazards as the season continues. Cooking, heaters, electrical outlets, and candles are all common fire hazards, especially with the hustle and bustle of the holidays.
If you set up a real tree for Christmas, keep it watered. Dry trees and Christmas lights can be set ablaze quickly under the right circumstances.
Another common holiday hazard is unattended candles. People are often busy running errands or visiting loved ones but be sure to blow out the candles before leaving the house.
If you decorate outside your house, use the proper gauge extension cord and weatherproof outlets to prevent electrical fires.
Fire prevention starts with you! Stay safe and have fun this holiday season!
