Winter Weather Advisory: February 21, 2018
A Winter Weather Advisory is still in effect for our area. Citizens are advised to stay off of the roads if possible, as public safety officials report they have become slick and hazardous. Those who must drive are advised to allot extra time to reach their destination.
Citizens are also advised to take caution when encountering City of Lawton Streets Division equipment and operations. Please see the following:
- Remain at least 200 feet behind salt and sanding equipment.
- Do not attempt to pass salt or sanding equipment.
“Each salt/sand truck carries a mixture of rock salt and rock sand which can cover five lane miles per load,” said Streets and Traffic Control Superintendent Cliff Haggenmiller. “Each route is approximately 44 miles in length, and it takes approximately 578,680 pounds of salt and sand to cover all identified routes within City limits. It is important to note that residential streets are not covered during these events.”
Early closures for the City of Lawton today include: City of Lawton Court and Prosecutor’s Office, which closed at 1 p.m.; and City of Lawton Public Library, closing at 5 p.m. Court payments will still be accepted online and by phone. Parks and Recreation has also closed the Benjamin O. Davis High Rise, HC King Center and Patterson Center for the remainder of the day.
